World football governing body Fifa is expected to give each member association $3 million (about K3 billion) under the Fifa Forward 3.0 for specific projects and long-term plans.

A statement from Fifa dated December 31 reads in part:“Fifa forward 3.0 will be launched in January 2023, providing a more comprehensive funding and support of football development projects across the world than ever before. The funds are meant to execute well-planned, specific football projects and achieving long-term development objectives.”

It further says member associations in desperate need can get $1.2 million (about K1.2 billion) cost for travel.

The statement said $60 million has been set aside for each confederation to develop, promote and organise football within the regions of its jurisdiction.

Fifa said this has been possible due to its prudence in financial management.

“The four-year cycle to the end of 2026 represents an increase in football development investment of almost 30 percent and is a direct consequence and financial situation of the new Fifa since 2016. A significant element of the investment will support Fifa’s goal of having 60 million female players,” it says.

Fifa has also set aside $5 million for each zonal/regional associations to organise regional football competitions for men, women and youth.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu could not be drawn to comment on how they plan to use the funds yesterday, saying: “We will present a brief of our budget outlook tomorrow [today].”

Football analyst Charles Nyirenda, who is former FAM general secretary, said applauded Fifa for the move.

He said: “FAM should engage stakeholders to set priorities bearing in mind that any investment carries with it recurrent costs, especially if it has to do with infrastructure development.

“As such, a business perception in whatever choices FAM makes is critical. Fifa has done well to make such an offer. On paper, the funds if properly used, can make a big difference.”

Football analyst George Kaudza Masina advised FAM to use the funds to improve infrastructure for its affiliates.

He said: “Apart from using the funds for administrative purposes, it is time FAM started developing the game at grass roots level. At the same time, let the funds trickle down to the elite league by giving a substantial share to Sulom who in turn are to give substantial grants to the Super League teams.

“At the same time redefine the role of the regional associations which over the years has been diluted. With such funding, it will also help to ease the burden government has been having with FAM’s never ending projects. Otherwise, let the FA not be excited with the funding lest they don’t bear any fruits to the nation at large.”
